After the thorough witness statement from John Stoddart, another witness was called against Andrew. Ann Park, servant to and residing with Robert Helm, keeper at (Kinlochurigan?) in the parish of Boleskine aforesaid – aged about 26 years declares:
“My master’s house is fully a mile from Fort Augustus. On Saturday 8th June, current, in the afternoon, a young man, whose name I understood to be Andrew Ballantyne, came to Helm’s house and remained until the following Monday morning, when he went out to attend Fort Augustus market, for the purpose of selling a horse as he said, which he had at the witness, John Stoddart’s house, and I think he said he had brought it from Strathpeffer in Ross-shire having got it in payment of a debt which was due his there. He did not tell me nor did I hear him say from whom he got the horse. After going out in the morning as aforesaid, he did not return and I was told the same day he had been apprehended, charged with stealing the horse.
Ballantyne was at Helm’s house about 8 days previous to the above occasion, and remained two or three nights, having been assisting his father, who was going to the south country, to take a parcel of sheep along the road, and when he left our house at this time he said he was going to Strathpeffer to get payment of some money which was due him, all which is truth.
Ballantyne did not say where he was going after selling the horse.”
