1911 Census, Kilmarnock

By 1911, Andrew and Sarah Campbell have been married for twenty-one years and have ten children. Agnes, now twenty-one, and Maggie, 18, no longer live at home but the rest of the family from John, aged 19, William, 16, Andrew 14, Jeannie 11, Alex. 9, Barbara 8, Matthew 6, to Cathie aged just one are all living at 8, Gilmour Street, Kilmarnock, a three roomed home.
Andrew is once again, at forty-six, a hewer in the pit and his three eldest sons have left school. John, 19, is a shop assistant in a grocers, William, 16, is a drawer at the mine, and Andrew, 14, is a butcher’s message boy. Matthew (my grandfather), Barbra, Alex and Jeannie are all at the school, leaving only Cathie at home with Sarah. By 1911, Sarah has given birth to twelve children, with only ten surviving.
